“Welcome to the Beaver River Trail! We’ve been waiting for you to walk the trail
and check out our family of sugar maples, red oaks and ironwood trees. Some of
us are 100 years old, but there are also younger trees in and amongst our tall
canopy.
Together, we’ve been watching seasons change and welcoming generations of
visitors beneath our branches. We anchor this linear natural corridor providing
homes for countless birds, insects and other wildlife.
But, until recently, our future was under threat. These woods stand on what was
once an unopened road allowance – land originally set aside for a future road.
Without action, this nature trail could have become pavement.
Instead, the people of Thornbury chose a different future.
When development threatened this natural corridor, residents, local
environmental groups, and the Town of The Blue Mountains came together to
protect it. Through years of citizen advocacy and determination, they secured this
landscape as the protected linear park you are walking through today.
As you continue your journey, remember: this forest is living proof of what people
can accomplish when they stand up for nature. Every tree here is a reminder that
citizen action can shape the future – and that sometimes, the most important
roads are the ones we choose not to build.”
