About St. Thomas Tree Trust
As the newest, and currently only municipally-run, chapter of Tree Trust, we are excited to play a small part in facilitating much needed maintenance for the mature trees in St Thomas that reside on privately owned land.
In 2017, St Thomas adopted two bylaws to govern the urban tree canopy: the Private Tree Preservation Bylaw (131-2017) and the Municipal Tree Preservation Bylaw (130-2017). These bylaws gave the city the ability to control/maintain all municipally-owned trees and provided a framework for residents to remove trees over 30cm DBH on private property. In 2022, we had all street and parkland trees inventoried in St Thomas, which is a powerful tool not only to maintain our urban canopy, but grow it as well; currently we have over 17.5k trees in our database! In 2025, we initiated the first steps to create our official Urban Forestry Management Plan, which will be a document to guide our urban forestry practices for years to come. We are excited for our community to be the newest chapter of Tree Trust!
Meet the Chapter Manager
Cody Montgomery, Chapter Manager, has been working around trees for 20+ years with 15 of them as an ISA Certified Arborist. After stints in Guelph and Kitchener working on Municipal forestry crews, he found his new home in St Thomas is 2021, working as an Urban Forester for the city. Since then, he has moved onto the management side of the Parks and Forestry Department and is very excited to lead this new chapter of Tree Trust!
