“Before you continue along on this crooked sidewalk, let me tell you the story of
how it came to be. I have been growing here on Victoria Street for decades. I am
a standout Sugar maple on our street and an established member of the
community.
5 years ago when the sidewalk needed upgrading, it seemed like my story might
be coming to an end. More often than not, big trees like me are removed to make
way for construction. But not this time.
To protect my roots, the town moved the location of the sidewalk and they
carefully excavated around my roots and used special materials under the sidewalk. My town came up with a solution to save me and showed people how
valuable I am. And with that, the meander in the sidewalk was developed.
I am an old tree, and am not a perfect tree, but my roots are protected and I am
still here stretching my branches, providing shade and cleaning our air all
because of extra care and a bend in the sidewalk.”
