“I am one of the many 100-year-old sugar maples that line this street. Take a look
or walk down Russel Street to your right and notice just how big we are. We
tower over the sidewalk – creating the iconic Ontario canopied streetscape that,
for decades, have been a familiar part of Ontario communities.
But these tree-lined streets are becoming harder to find as mature trees are lost
to the pressures of growing communities and neglect. Construction, changing
landscapes, and impacts below the surface can make it harder for trees like me
to thrive.
By contrast, take a look to your left down Napier Street. The towering canopy is
gone. There is however some good news. The one big sugar maple tree
remaining on Napier Street at the corner has been getting some special TLC.
With understanding, proper care, and a commitment to protecting mature trees,
we can ensure I keep standing here, alongside my neighbours, for generations to
come.”
