“Hello! I am a sugar maple, and I’ve been growing here for more than 125 years.
If you looked at me from a distance, you might think I should be cut down. My
trunk has two large cavities, and to many people, that can look like the end of a
tree’s story. But happily, appearances can be deceiving.
For decades, I’ve been doing what trees have done for millions of years. As the
cavities formed, I grew new wood around them. This extra growth, called reaction
wood, helped keep me strong, even as I aged.
When arborists examined me, they looked beyond what was missing to see what
remained. Thanks to the generous support of Tree Trust and the local Rotary
Club, arborists carefully cleaned out the cavities, where trapped debris had been
accelerating decay, and discovered I still have enough healthy wood to safely
support myself. They also pruned my canopy to reduce the weight and
movement of my largest branches, giving me a better chance to thrive for years
to come.
I’m proof that an old tree shouldn’t solely be judged by its scars. I am an example
of how with expert assessment and care I can continue to provide shade, habitat,
beauty, and clean air, hopefully, for generations.”
