The idea was sparked after local residents reached out with questions about protecting older trees in their area.
Nicola Gailits, Tree Trust’s Erin community lead shared that while tree planting is important, many people forget the value of the trees that are already standing. She explained that mature trees can store as much as 300 young trees, making them essential for climate action. Gailitis also highlighted how how communities are beginning to shift their thinking and are choosing to keep existing trees rather than remove them.
The Erin chapter will officially launch on May 24 with a special community event. A 100-year-old sugar maple will be pruned by a conservation arborist, there will be a tree planting demonstration, and the first 80 attendees will receive free saplings. A wood lot tour will also take place to teach about sustainable tree management.
Tree Trust is encouraging more people to get involved and is currently looking for new members and a chapter lead in Erin.
