This Spring was the launch of a new chapter of Tree Trust in Erin. It was a successful day that brought the community of Erin together to celebrate elder trees.

The day began with inspiring speeches from Nicola Gailits (Tree Trust event organizer), Toni Ellis (Tree Trust Executive Director), and Adrina Bardekjian (Director of Research at Tree Canada). They invoked a sense of awe and wonder at the importance of trees, before lead arborist Phil Guenter (Baum Tree Care) provided a mini demonstration showing exactly how elder trees are pruned to maintain vigour.

A beautiful Sugar Maple at All Saints Anglican Church received expert conservation pruning and maintenance care that will prolong its life and benefit its overall health and structure. Phil and his team climbed into this amazing elder tree while the bystanders watched in awe.

Following Phil’s climb into the limbs of the elder tree, Town Councillors Bridget Ryan and John Brennan were presented with a plaque to be placed at the tree’s base in recognition of the important care it received. They expressed their sincere appreciation and strong support for the promising beginnings of a Tree Trust chapter in Erin.

Bob Baker of Baker Forestry Services led an engaging tree planting demonstration, where he taught successful techniques for growing strong, resilient trees and planted a red oak behind the Erin post office! Bob answered various questions from the public about the do’s and don’ts of tree planting.

Guests of the Erin Elder Tree Care Day didn’t leave empty handed! There were draws for some great prizes including 3 copies of the book Our Green Heart: The Soul and Science of Forests by Diana Beresford-Kroeger. In addition, 140 saplings—representing six different tree species—were given away, accompanied by tasty refreshments!

Attendees gather around to try their luck in a prize draw and collect their saplings to take home.

Guests then split into groups to take part in one of two voluntary activities including a Woodlot Walk-Through guided by Pam Jackson at a beautiful property just on the outskirts of Erin, or a guided tree inventory walk in Woolen Mill Trail with Braedon Witt of Tree Trust.
