In late October, Guelph Tree Trust, led by arborist Doug Steel from Full Circle Tree Care, performed conservation pruning on a stunning Sugar Maple at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre (IJC) in Guelph. This 50-year-old tree, standing 15 meters tall with a DSH of 61 cm, received specialized care to ensure its continued vitality and beauty.
The crown of the tree, consisting of five main leaders and numerous smaller healthy limbs, showed signs of decline in the central leader due to nutrient competition. To address this, the team removed large deadwood (4 cm in diameter and larger) to promote healthy growth, reduced the uppermost crown and overextended limbs on the NE side with precision cuts (2.5–5 cm in diameter) to balance the canopy, and enhanced light and air infiltration to maximize the tree’s overall health and eco-services.
This public event highlighted the connection between the natural and spiritual environment. Greg Kennedy, Executive Director of Ignatius Jesuit Centre, shared reflections on the Centre’s 75-year history, showcasing how the increased tree canopy mirrors its mission of fostering spiritual growth and ecological engagement.
He encouraged attendees to reflect on how trees benefit our spirits and teach us valuable lessons about resilience and harmony.
This care ensures the Sugar Maple remains a vibrant and inspiring part of the landscape for generations to come. A second maple on the property is also slated for similar specialized treatment.
Thank you to Doug Steel and the team for extending the life of this magnificent tree!
